FREE HOSTING COSTS EXPLAINED…DIGITAL NOMAD STYLE.
Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
So what are the costs of running a hosting site that currently handles about 350-400 visitors per day?
It’s shockingly simple and cheap, really.
The monthly costs to run Hostt.com:
- KnownHost VPS SSD-2 Hosting Package – $50
We are using a VPS server to host our site because we do not yet need a dedicated server. Remember, VPS is a roommate situation. Hostt.com shares a server with a couple other different sites.
(You might ask why we dont host our own site, Hostt.com on our own servers…?)
Great question…However, We don’t want to mix our entire site with a bunch of FREE HOSTING sites on our servers.
Think of a landlord living in his own apartment building…it could work, but sometimes, it’s best to live elsewhere and keep things separated.
Our servers are for free hosting clients.
The Hostt.com page needs different hosting services.
We receive daily traffic and want to provide an excellent user experience.
FREE HOSTING is best for setting up a site BEFORE getting traffic.
We would rather pay an amazing host that specializes in hosting sites like ours.
Hostt.com is a profitable business now and we have to treat it as such.
Spending on better hosting allows us to provide a great user experience for our users.
We have fast page loading times and rarely lag. We also have 99.99% uptime and killer support.
These guys at Knownhost are a superior niche host. We like them for our hosting needs.
2. WHMCS license -$20
We need to provide users with a software to “hook up” to our server.
We are using WHMCS to easily get users onto our free hosting servers located in Austin, Texas, USA.
3. Al Gomez SEO – $800
We just started paying AL for his services and expect his expert team to help us gain some good traffic in the next several months.
We expect to double our current visitors in the next 3-4 months. SEO is always a longer term investment.
4. Canva.com – $13
We make all the images and visuals on either Canva or Pictograph.
Here is an example of one that took me 5 minutes to make. No Photoshop required.
And that’s about it…We kept the site’s costs to a minimum until it showed a profit in June 2016.
At that point, we added AL GOMEZ to our team for his SEO services.
In order to make money, you gotta invest in your site.
We waited until it showed a profit and then we went after the SEO big guns.
Made sense to us…
Hopefully this helped uncover the costs of running a freemium website that caters to the hosting space.
Remember, keep the costs low until the site shows a profit.
We feel that keeping it under $100/month is ideal for the first several months until the traffic starts showing up.
At that point, you can upgrade to better services and start providing a better experience for users.
My view today on the Lake…
